Intermediate and advanced jazz piano lessons

Billy Lester is teaching intermediate and advanced jazz piano lessons.

According to Billy:

“I’ve been a Jazz pianist for most of my life. I had the good fortune to meet and study with the great jazz pianist and teacher Sal Mosca. He imparted a love of music with a most  deep sincerity. His music and teaching has always inspired me to understand my own music and to develop my own style of teaching. Most of my musical time is spent improvising and developing a personal musical “vocabulary”. For me the goal of the improvising  is to express my feelings through the medium of Jazz. I encourage my students to listen to the musicians who inspired me. They would be Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbeck, Fats Waller, Roy Eldridge, Lester Young, Teddy Wilson, Billie Holiday, Art Tatum, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh and Sal Mosca. The aforesaid musicians gave me direction. They instilled in me a concept of beauty, swing, and musical language from which I hoped to evolve.

My teaching techniques include piano skill, theory, ear training, sight reading, listening and transcribing jazz solos, and especially discussions about the nature and purpose of improvising. Through years of self examination I have developed techniques to facilitate the discovery of one’s own artistic “voice”. Therein lies the greatest pleasure.”

Jazz piano lessons for adult beginners

Billy Lester is teaching jazz piano lessons for adult beginners.

According to Billy:

” Most adult beginners come to the lessons with a bit of trepidation either from previous bad experiences with other piano teachers or with a fear that they will not be successful. I always approached music with a love of learning for learning’s sake. My job is to impart that love of learning. I’ve spent many years  asking myself how I would like to be taught. And the answer is “with as little pressure as possible!” With that in mind, I’ve developed a mode of teaching which has a strong emphasis on explaining the music. Most of my adult students are learning to play the music from the American Song Book:i.e. the music of  George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, etc. At first we study chord structure and scales. With that information I am able to teach songs using numbers to describe the chord position within each key e.g. the II7 going to a V7 etc. Then we learn the relationship of the melody to the chord. In that way the music in both hands becomes unified. When the student finally actually reads the notes of the music he is able to “sense” the flow of the music, rather than reading random musical symbols.

If the Adult beginner chooses, we can then approach improvisation in it’s most beginning stages. After that…the sky’s the limit.”

Lessons in Music Theory

Billy Lester is teaching lessons in Music Theory as part of his curriculum for all students.

According to Billy:

“As the beginner’s skill grows, we begin to study theory. The bent is towards understanding the harmonic structure of a classical or jazz piece, and also towards jazz improvisation if the student is so inclined.

Listening to music is also on the agenda. Depending on the student’s developmental level, Classical musical from Bach to Stravinsky and Jazz from ragtime to bebop are recommended. Musicians can not live in a vacuum and listening to music is a great way to be inspired.”

Piano lessons for Children and Beginners

Billy Lester is teaching piano lessons for children and beginners at his studio in Yonkers.

According to Billy –

“If a child knows the alphabet, he or she is ready to begin. Explaining how to identify the white keys of the piano  enables the beginner to learn simple folk or nursery tunes. I also compose little tunes for little children. The goal is to start reading music with a design towards classical, blues and boogie woogie. The beginning books which I use are “Pageants for Piano” by Donald Waxman, “Introducory Classics to Moderns” by Dene Agay and “Suzuki Piano vol. 2”. My expertise in Jazz allows me to include pieces such as “Muskat Ramble”, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”, “On The Sunny Side Of The Street”, “When You’re Smiling”, “Over The Rainbow”, When You Wish Upon A Star”, “My Favorite Things” etc.”
