Intermediate and advanced jazz piano lessons

Billy Lester is teaching intermediate and advanced jazz piano lessons.

According to Billy:

“I’ve been a Jazz pianist for most of my life. I had the good fortune to meet and study with the great jazz pianist and teacher Sal Mosca. He imparted a love of music with a most  deep sincerity. His music and teaching has always inspired me to understand my own music and to develop my own style of teaching. Most of my musical time is spent improvising and developing a personal musical “vocabulary”. For me the goal of the improvising  is to express my feelings through the medium of Jazz. I encourage my students to listen to the musicians who inspired me. They would be Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbeck, Fats Waller, Roy Eldridge, Lester Young, Teddy Wilson, Billie Holiday, Art Tatum, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh and Sal Mosca. The aforesaid musicians gave me direction. They instilled in me a concept of beauty, swing, and musical language from which I hoped to evolve.

My teaching techniques include piano skill, theory, ear training, sight reading, listening and transcribing jazz solos, and especially discussions about the nature and purpose of improvising. Through years of self examination I have developed techniques to facilitate the discovery of one’s own artistic “voice”. Therein lies the greatest pleasure.”

Billy is currently accepting new students at his Yonkers, N.Y. studio.
